Born in Edinburgh, John started his insurance career with Eagle Star in 1973 moving to Allstate Insurance Co. Ltd as a Field Underwriter in 1980.
John moved to Bristol joining NatWest Insurance Services in 1986 where he was Head of Business & Commercial Insurance with responsibility for commission revenue in excess of £7m. John was later appointed by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group to dispose of the enlarged Group’s Commercial Insurance Broking arm, at the time of the NatWest take-over.
In December 2001, John set up BKG West Ltd with NatWest colleague Mike Smallbone in response to customer demand. John’s hobbies include golf, cars, football and sport generally.

Mike comes from a Hampshire farming background and was born in Winchester. Mike chose a career in insurance rather than dairy farming and joined British Oak in the City of London in 1966.
Following various mergers, Mike progressed to the Guardian Royal Exchange in Southampton where he became a trainee Inspector. In 1969 Mike joined the National Westminster Bank Insurance department and moved from the City to Bristol in 1973 with the Bank. During his 31-year career with NatWest, Mike majored on corporate customers, championing their cause.
Mike had previously worked with John Garry for many years and BKG West Ltd was formed on 1 December 2001 to further their close interest in the insurance needs of substantial corporate customers. Mike is a keen league tennis player and qualified coach with interests in walking and all other country pursuits
